Theremin instrument

What is a theremin?

A theremin is a fully electrical musical instrument that is controlled by moving the human body through space.

The theremin will have two antennas, controlling pitch and volume respectively, that output an electromagnetic field. A human body is able to disrupt this field by moving their hand closer to the antenna. The theremin generates a variable frequency oscillator that is connected to the antenna. It also creates a fixed frequency oscillator and measures the difference between the two oscillators to determine the frequency/voltage of the output audio signal.

This project will involve constructing a theremin with pitch and volume control, high sound quality and tunable sensitivity.

This will incorporate signal analysis and telecommunications knowledge, with oscillators, signal generation, buffers and phase shifting. We will also use AM demodulators (tuning circuits, envelope detectors and low-pass filters). Other skills include electrical circuit design and construction.
